"See y'all later!" Adam calls as we walk out the door and climb into his car. We back out of the paved driveway. The radio clock's blue letter glowed 11:30 thirty minutes until curfew. We were going back to my cousins house. We're driving down the crooked back roads of Breckenridge County hand in hand talking about the party we'd just left. We roll up to a stop sign and make a left turn onto the main road. We come to the four way stop ahead. The dark snakelike road was deserted. When out light turns green he accelorates, we make it around the first curve.Up ahead theres a car speeding and swerving from lane to lane, he wasnt leaving ours. The driver was coming right at us. I grip Adam's hand tightly, hold my breath, and squeeze my eyes shut as he makes his decision. Adam's hand is cutting the circulation off to mine as he slams on the breaks and swerves onto the shoulder. The car zooms past just seconds after our car stops completely.
"You alright?" he asked breathlessly, he too had held his breath. I nodded soundlessly, still frozen in fear. He rested his head against the head rest and ran his shaking hands through his dark hair.
"C'mon lets get home," he said starting putting the car in drive and slowly pulling out the road. His hand found mine once more and he gave it a comforting squeeze.
